Today I am thankful for:
1. Cowboy the safety cat. At 5:30 this morning our heater came on for the first time this season. We were all fast asleep when we awoke to our cat running to the top of the house and down to the bottom, howling like a siren. It was like he was saying, “Everyone up and out of the house. NOW!” My daughter and I, knowing that the odd smell came from the heat, comforted him until he settled down. I will sleep even more soundly from now on, knowing that Cowboy is watching out for us.
2. Bouncy Balls. As I was straightening up the house, I noticed two bouncy balls sitting on the window sill. I paused as I felt a rush of gratitude. There was a time in my life that my husband and I were not sure if we would be able to have children. That is a story for another time. But, it deepened my appreciation of a noisy house, little messes, and stray fingerprints. Those little bouncy balls were a symbol of so much joy. I am deeply grateful.
3. Bugs Bunny. We are spending tonight watching Bugs Bunny as a family. Somehow, I have a deeper appreciation than I did when I was younger. “I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.” Sharing this old favorite with the kids has given us all the giggles. Savor.
