Motherhood: My Favorite Thing

On Mother’s Day I decided that my favorite thing is being a mother. I love the many skills this job entails. Over the course of the past 15 years I have practiced:

  • Kissing hurt knees
  • Changing diapers
  • Teaching math and reading
  • Catching numerous balls
  • Running in a zig-zag pattern on the playground (after escaping toddler)
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Making cookies for multiple kids (above and beyond my own)
  • Praying
  • Wiping tears
  • Taxi driving kids to school, sports, music events, and youth group ventures
  • Watching the stars
  • Singing goofy songs
  • Telling fart jokes
  • Rocking a sick child all day long
  • Being stern with homework
  • Being gentle with fears
  • Perpetual cruise director all summer long (“What are we doing today, Mom?”)
  • Swim coach
  • Cooking
  • Cleaning (in order to bless my family with a warm, welcoming space)
  • Tutoring
  • PTO food prep volunteer
  • Receiving beautiful impromptu picked flowers
  • Movie nights with plenty of pizza and root beer
  • Video gaming
  • Listening
  • Sharing my clothes and shoes
  • Reading bedtime stories
  • Comforting unmet expectations
  • Cheerleading
  • and so much more…

I am grateful today for the gift of sharing this life with my husband and children. I want to savor every moment because I know this time passes fast. Thank you, God, for the blessing of being a mother.
